At 1080p and an optimal viewing distance of 13ft you’re looking at 100in TV. At 720p and an optimal viewing distance of 13ft you’re looking at 66″. Those are going to be some monster sets though.

I think if you hit the 60″ mark though, you’d set yourself up pretty good in around the 13ft mark. 17ft is a big distance though. Then you might need the super large sizes. But again these are the “optimal” distances. You could just go and measure it out in a store and see what you think is okay for your own taste.

That’s about how far I am from my TV. I just went from a 32″ LCD to a 50″ plasma and the difference is remarkable. But I think 46″ would work just fine. So I say 46″-52″ should work.

jf is right and whomever gave a thumbs down there doesn’t understand resolution.

If you’re going to just watch standard definition material then yes, 42″ would be fine for 13~17ft, but if you’re watching high definition and you sit that far away from a 42″ you’ll get ZERO benefit from the extra resolution.

Stick within 13ft and get a 60″ plasma…or move in closer to around 8ft and go with a 50″ screen. Then you’ll take advantage of 1080p.

If you think that’s incorrect you need to read this – http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/

Screen size means nothing without considering both your viewing distance and the source resolution you’ll be watching. If you love Blu-ray and you want to sit 17ft away you’ll want to get a front projector and a 120″ screen.
