LCD is much more ‘suitable’ for display in terms of quality, weight, technology, etc… but unfortunately it can’t be made as big as Plasma. The only reason why plasma is in the market is because it can make bigger screens. Plasma problems are: it uses phosphor just as the old CRTs, so it may burn with time, handling of plasma must be much more careful and it consumes much more power (not eco friendly). LCD problem is, as I said, It can’t be used in realy large screens, but other than that all is good. If i’d have to buy a big screen I’d prefer a rear projector (which also uses LCD) instead of a Plasma.
ICanada’s answer is mostly right, except LCDs are plenty big, like my new 52″ LCD that I just ordered on Saturday, and you don’t have to handle plasmas gently.
Technically, they deliver a picture using two completely different technologies. A plasma excites gas in cells that lights up. An LCD has a backlight and filters that light to let only certain light through to illuminate the pixels.
For practical purposes, Plasmas tend to be cheaper in 40″+ sizes, and display low light level scenery (blacks) better. Their screen is also less subject to damage. They consume a bit more power and are heavier.
LCDs tend to be more expensive in larger sizes, much brighter, have more trouble showing low light scenes (although they are getting better at it), more power efficient, and lighter.
What you prefer is up to your tastes. After looking around a lot recently, I’ve ruled out plasmas all together. I really like a bright TV that pops! I’ll live with the ocassional poorly displayed dark scene.
All the 1080p plasmas I found seem kind of dim to me. Strangely the 720p plasmas seem much brighter to me. Don’t know the reason why. But since I was looking for 1080p, that left LCD.
