A plasma TV could be HD, and a HD TV could be plasma.
A plasma TV could be ED (enhanced definition, 480p) or it could be HD (720p, 1080i, 1080p).
HD TV could be a plasma or LCD (They're the two most popular type of of HD out now. There are cathode HD TV, but it's expensive and extremely heavy. Laser TV is also in the works.)
Plasma TV uses gases to form the pictures. LCD uses liquid crystals to form the pictures.

Well first of all…a plasma TV is the type of TV you’re getting…like LCD (liquid like a computer monitor), and DLP (the “big back” tube TVs). HD TVs are TVs that are capable of receiving a high-def signal. You can have an HD Plasma TV, so your question is confusing.
Uhh…it’s like saying what’s the difference between a Black Honda and a Honda Accord. You can have a Black Honda Accord.
Anyway…if you’re looking to purchase a TV, look into getting an LCD (they have come a long way and I believe they have surpassed Plasmas…plasmas sometimes burn the image into the screen) Sony Bravia and Samsungs are great models. Oh, and HD TVs come in 1080i and 1080p. 1080p will give you the clearest picture. (If you really want to know more about TVs e-mail me because there is so much more to consider.)
Note: 720p and 1080i are the same thing. (saw the other users post) The difference between 1080i and 1080p is the way the pixels are displayed on the screen. 1080i will skip lines when forming a picture going 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and then go back and fill in 2, 4, 6, 8. whereas 1080p will fill in the lines in sequence. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…etc. That’s why 1080p will give you a clearer picture because it’s not being separated. (Hope this isn’t too technical…it’s easier to show and explain to the cust. than just explain it)
by the way a big ol tv like everyone used to have before plasmas and lcd’s are called CRT not DLP, DLP is a type of rear screen projector like the crt but i would stay away from them much as you can, the bulbs last about a year and if you do get one go with Toshiba and not Samsung, Toshiba will warrant a bulb and Samsung will not, they last 3 years tops, i own both and hate them
