Your Plasma is merely displaying what you feed it. Your downloaded movie file has too little resolution to look good on your plasma.

Your plasma is probably much larger and higher resolution than your old CRT set. Defects that were too small to see on your old TV now show up in (in)glorious detail on the plasma. You need more resolution and/or less aggressive compression (don’t set the target bit rate so low).
If you’re downloaded file is low resolution, it’s going to look worse on your HD plasma set than on your non-HD (old CRT) set.
Find higher resolution files to download. However, be aware these files will also be much larger.
Another tip is to make sure you’ve connected your media player (computer, set-top box, whatever) to your TV using cables that can support HD video. This is either component video or HDMI. Just the basic yellow/red/white cables isn’t going to cut it – they don’t support HD resolutions.
Resolution of the video files is set too low due to the video compression.
If you use less (or no) compression, you’ll get noticeably better quality, but it’ll take up a hell of a lot more space on your hard drive.
Furthermore, your CRT television has a lower native resolution, and unlike plasma, CRT displays are capable of multisyncing (displaying more than one resolution)
