Panasonic TC-P50G25 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTVAmazon.com Product Description
Building on its award-winning 2009 Plasma line, Panasonic’s 50-inch VIERA TC-P50G25 Plasma HDTV features a new panel with NeoPDP technologies that provide the best balance of black and white under brighter environments while also offering higher energy efficiency. The new NeoPDP Plasma panel also further reduces reflections and creates sharper pictures with higher contrast in brighter environments. This G25 series model provides 1080p resolution, full-time 1080 TV lines of moving picture resolution, and 600Hz Sub-field Drive for superb motion clarity.

This and other models in the G25 line offer Panasonic’s improved VIERA Cast functionality, which enables you to stream Internet video and audio programming as well as turn this HDTV into a high-definition, wireless video conference center with Skype capabilities (when using the optional Panasonic communication camera and Wi-Fi adapter accessories). You can also play back JPEG images and AVCHD videos stored on and operate a variety of VIERA Link components–from Blu-ray Disc players to digital cameras–through a single remote.

Adhering to Panasonic’s commitment to the environment, this VIERA model–as well as all 2010 models–features improved power consumption and meets the new, more stringent Energy Star 4.0 requirements. And you’ll get a long Plasma panel life of up to 100,000 hours–more than 30 years of viewing when watched 8 hours a day–before the brightness of the panel decreases to half.

Key Features

Panasonic’s VIERA G25 series Plasma HDTV with streaming content from VIERA Cast partners.

VIERA Cast: Enjoy a variety of streaming movies, TV shows, and music, photo slideshows, and home video conferencing with VIERA Cast’s assortment of online content–including Amazon Video on Demand, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter, YouTube, and Picasa. VIERA Cast’s addition of Skype (requires optional communication camera; model TY-CC10) enables you to connect and communicate through voice and video calls from the comfort of your own living room.

This VIERA HDTV includes two USB ports for connecting a keyboard or a Wi-FI LAN adapter (sold separately) as well as an Ethernet port for wired LAN connection. No PC required.

VIERA Image Viewer: View full-HD images with the integrated SD card slot, enabling you to view JPEG photos and AVCHD videos captured from your digital camera or camcorder on the big screen. Navigate your images via an easy-to-use thumbnail display, and choose from among five types of background music and five display effects. Plus, messages and memos can be added to photos from a PC to create detailed travelogues and original slideshows with messages.

VIERA Link: Allows the interlinked operation of various AV devices–from DVD and Blu-ray Disc players to home theater sound systems to digital cameras and camcorders–using only the VIERA remote control by simply connecting the devices to each other by an HDMI cable (see pop-up illustration).

Game Mode: With Game Mode, quicker image response increases the enjoyment of video games when a game console is connected to the TV. What’s more, VIERA produces the dark images in video games more clearly. This mode works with the anti-image retention (wobbling) function, too.

NeoPDP: By redesigning the Plasma panel’s cell structure and developing an innovative new filter, Panasonic has tripled the luminous efficiency (compared to 2007 models) of its VIERA Plasma HDTVS–resulting in stunningly beautiful images while also reducing power consumption.

1080 Moving Picture Resolution: With 1080 lines of moving picture resolution and integrated NeoPDP technology’s high-speed drive performance, the display time for each image frame is shortened to minimize afterimages, making decisive calls in football matches and delicate motions in figure skating performances appear crystal clear.

600Hz Sub-field Drive: 600Hz technology lets you view superb full-HD motion and still images with 1080 lines of resolution. For even greater clarity with motion images, Panasonic uses its own unique image-analysis technology, which converts the motion in each scene into data. And each frame is practically displayed for a shorter length of time than in previous systems, to reduce aftereffects (see an illustration of 600Hz technology).

Infinite Black: The luminous efficiency of this NeoPDP Plasma panel has been improved by reducing the electrical pre-discharge that causes graying has greatly enhanced black gradation. The result is crisp blacks with no graying–even in living rooms with bright, afternoon lighting. And minimizing the electrical pre-discharge helps to both raise contrast and save energy.

THX Certified Display: THX reproduces film images as the filmmakers intended them. To receive THX certification, TVs undergo stringent tests to determine, for example, whether the exact same brightness and color are displayed at all screen locations, and whether black levels satisfy standard criteria.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

I am the owner of a 2009 Panasonic G10 and I wanted to write a warning to all potential buyers of this product.

2008, 2009, and 2010 Panasonic plasma TVs have a ‘feature’ that increases voltage after predetermined amounts of viewing. This feature is causing 2009 plasma screens to have significantly increase black levels (~3 times brighter) after approximately 1000 hours of use. Panasonic has responded to this incredible revelation by saying that this is a standard ‘feature’ and that the TVs are operating ‘normally’.

From CNET, who tested sets at different hours of usage: “According to our measurements, the models with 1,500 hours both reproduced black at 0.023 footlamberts; the 500-hour models measured 0.008″. If you do the math, this represents almost a threefold increase.

People who purchased these sets are realizing that they purchased a ‘lemon’, as one of the main benefits (deep black levels) is a lie, or at least a ‘temporary feature’.

As far as the 2010 models go, Panasonic has indicated that the same ‘technology’ is being used (ie voltage increases) but that these increases will occur more gradually. It is too early to tell what exactly the company means by ‘more gradually’, but what is certain is that Panasonic had shown utter disregard for those that purchased 2009 sets.

Please head over to the professional review site CNET for more information:

Or search for ‘panasonic black level problem’ on Google. Another option would be to search for the name of the CNET editor who is covering this issue, David Katzmaier.

This tv is one hundred percent dead on. This is my sixth hdtv and let me tell you the g25 blows them all away. Easy to set up put this on thx mode, sit back and you wont believe your eyes. The picture is jaw dropping. I could babble all day about why you should get it. Simply look at the price ,look at the specs, look at the picture, look at who makes it and it equals a no-brainer. Thank you tv gods I believe !!!! April 10. I have had this tv for a couple of weeks now. The most important thing I have noticed is that in standard definition it is fantastic, yup fantastic. Last night my wife way watching tv and I noticed it wasnt in hd by using the controller info and I couldnt believe my eyes. I’m telling you, you will be making a HUGE mistake if you buy another tv. Everyone who has seen it can’t believe the picture, they all want to come over with movies and watch it on the g25 (im not kidding). Stop reading buy one and I promise you will see that you have made the right choice. This is the best electronic purchase I have ever made!!!!!

Definitely worth the wait. I was pondering to buy the G10, but then saw all the hype on the internet, and decided to wait for 3 more weeks for it. Awesome picture, and it is so light (compared to G10) I carried it into the house all by my self. that 10 lbs difference was just enough reason to get the G10.

Regarding LEDs, I still think it is premature. until you have an LED in each pixel, I do not think it is worth getting. Although bright it is just another LCD.

Only negative thing is I could not figure out where I can buy the dongle to make it wireless.

My wife and I bought bought this TV two weeks ago and we have been very happy with it so far. This was our first big-screen/HDTV and we were glad we chose this TV. We were able to find it for $1000 on sale at Nebraska Furniture Mart.

I have been most impressed with the color quality with the TV. The depth of colors, especially the blacks, make me happy we chose a plasma over an LCD. Plus, the 600 Hz refresh rate blows away even the “state of the art” 240 Hz on LCD/LED. There are no awkward looking movements on this TV like you see in the LCD/LED TVs in the stores.

The sound quality on this TV is fine; I have read a lot of reviews that say that similiar Panasonic models have horrible sound quality. Unless you are expecting Bose-quality sound coming from the TV, the sound is fine and in fact better than our previous CRT TV. It’s not a big deal to me if the sound isn’t Bose-quality; I’d rather pay less for the TV than have to pay more for a built-in speaker upgrade.

I really don’t think the THX certification is that big of a deal. The THX picture mode is nice, but I prefer the custom picture settings that I have self-calibrated to my preferences on the TV. All the THX cerfitication really means to me is that the TV your are buying is one of the manufacturer’s higher-end models.

We did have a problem with a couple of the pixels going completely white during one of the first nights we had the TV. We were worried at first, but it’s been over a week and we haven’t had any problems. I’ve heard that plasma TVs may require some time to get running at full capacity (or something to that extent) so we weren’t too concerned.

The only other thing I notice about the TV is that it does make a faint buzzing sound while running. I have read this is standard with all plasma TVs. It’s not really that noticable unless you are really close to the TV and have the sound way down. It’s quite minor if you ask me and I wouldn’t let it change your mind between buying a plasma and buying a LCD/LED TV.
